Extra education, specialized training, more experience
Dentists and orthodontists start off on the same trajectory, with both beginning their careers in dental school. However, once they graduate, dentists will typically begin practicing, while orthodontists must embark on another few years of education specifically for orthodontics.
Dr. Cserna spent 11 years training to become an expert in her field. That’s four years of undergraduate education, four years of dental school, and three years of orthodontic residency training.
During this time, she learned about the way our mouths grow and mature, developed specific diagnostic skills, and worked on a number of case studies. She also received training in biomechanical techniques and how to successfully move the teeth with braces, aligners, and other appliances. As you can see, becoming an orthodontist is a lengthy process!
